  • A Million Trout a Year: The Red River State Fish Hatchery

Long before trout became a Red River pastime, they were a Red River product. A hatchery has stood in the valley near Questa since 1941, and today the Red River State Fish Hatchery produces about 1.7 million rainbow trout a year — more than the state's four other hatcheries combined. It is the largest production hatchery in New Mexico.

More than half a million of those fish are catchable, 9-to-10-inch trout stocked in waters across the state. The hatchery also raises triploid — sterile — trout for waters where interbreeding with native fish is not wanted, a careful bit of conservation science behind the fishing.

The whole operation runs on mountain water. Cold spring water is piped from an infiltration gallery near Questa, and warm springs flow down from the canyon upstream; both are gravity-fed through the hatch house, three sets of covered raceways, and a public show pond. Rainbow trout eggs are incubated in the hatch house, then moved through the raceways — from A to B to C — as they grow.

Visitors are welcome, and it is worth the short trip. The hatchery sits about two miles off Highway 522 down a paved road, with picnic pull-offs along the way. There is no formal tour, but a self-guided walk covers the fry tubs, the raceways, and the show pond, where children love feeding the big trout. A free fishing pond serves kids 11 and under and anglers 65 and older, and the Red River itself runs right by for licensed anglers.

Eighty-five years after it opened, the hatchery is still doing the quiet work behind New Mexico's trout fishing — one raceway at a time. It is a reminder that the valley's economy was never only gold and snow.
